Sutter Health Sonographer III Diagnostic Imaging- San Carlos (Per Diem) in San Carlos, California

Position Overview:

The Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment and for performing and communication results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, diseases and new procedures as they evolve

Principal and Accountabilities:

·Prepares patient for clinical assessment and diagnosticexaminations

·Greets and verifies proper identification of patient

·Checks consent forms for content prior to procedure

·Selects appropriate equipment for specialized procedure

·Assists patient with dressing and undressing in a pleasant manner when necessary

·Instructs patient on procedure to be performed in easy to understand terms

·Assists patient on and off exam table and positions patient properly in order to obtain required images

·Identifies patients with special needs and provides appropriate assistance

·Performs sonographic procedures on patientbased on department policy and procedures

·Demonstrates anatomy under investigation through proper patient positioning and technique selection

·Performs color Doppler and be able to identify anomalies and take alternative scanning techniques to demonstrate pathology

·Assist physician with procedures when needed

·Communicatesand documentspatient’s information

·Provides complete study with preliminary report and images to physician within a timely matter

·Ensures files and records are properly completed with required information , including patient history, previous exams, procedure charge codes, ect

·Maintains work area and exam room on a daily basis

·Ensures equipment is clean and properly working and will notify appropriate staff if equipment is damaged or non-working

·Stocks supplies as necessary in order to assure appropriate amounts are available

·Inspects all dated and sterile packaged items to ensure there are no outdated supplies

·Follows the commitment to excellence and treats patients, families, visitors and each other with courtesy, dignity, respect and professionalism

·Provides other clerical support duties

·Assists in training of new staff members

·Participates in special projects as assigned

·Performs additional duties which may include floating to other departments and or locations



  • High Diploma or equivalent

  • Graduate from a formal school of Ultrasound

  • Current BLS Certification

  • ARDMS certifications

  • Must have obtained and performing well in minimum three (3) total registries, to include AB and/or OBGYN



  • 5 years’ experience

  • Knowledge of diagnostic principles, procedures and equipment

  • Knowledge of diagnostic sonography principles and procedures as well as operation and maintenance of ultrasound imaging equipment as normally acquired through experience and completion of an approved School of Ultrasound Technology.

  • Verbal and written communication skills for frequent contact with physicians, employees, patients and patient families; requires patience and compassion.

  • Basic computer skills to include keyboarding, mouse movement and data entry skills to enter information into practice management such as electronic health records.

  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks

  • Ability to lift and position patients properly using best practices

  • Visual capabilities to observe patients

  • Ability to maintain composure during challenging interpersonal interactions

  • Strong verbal/written communication and listening skills; including excellent interpersonal skills and telephone communication

  • Working knowledge of terminology/anatomy

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods

  • Applies moderate mental application and concentration to handle varying procedures and interruptions

  • Ability to work with other in a flexible and cooperative manner
